Definition
Hosting in Europe means placing a tool's servers, databases and backups in data centres located in the European Union, with providers who commit not to transfer the data elsewhere by default. It concerns the application, but also the services it calls: AI models, email sending, audience measurement.
It is neither the same thing as owning the code nor as the application's security; it is one of their conditions.
Why it matters to a business owner
For a business owner, hosting in Europe simplifies GDPR compliance (no transfer outside the European Union to justify) and answers a question that clients, large accounts and regulated professions ask earlier and earlier: where is my data?
It also reduces a dependency: the data stays within a legal framework the company knows, and can be taken over by another European host if needed.

Common mistakes
Checking where the application is hosted and forgetting its third-party services. A tool hosted in France that sends every document to an AI model outside Europe is not hosted in Europe.
Thinking hosting in Europe is enough. Access rights, logging, backups and the contract with the host matter as much as the address of the data centre.
